Cheers. I'll give the 79MB package a try. - #4Anyone know what driver I need to restart a Sony VGN-AR11M laptop with XP MCE?
I can't seem to find which nVIDIA / SATA / RAID oem floppy I need to download?
Hmmmm. Seems its not nVidia. There is a SATA folder on the HDD but it contains Si3132 drivers - hdd not detected.
Apparently it's a AHCI on ICH7, but when i try to install the drivers from that folder it gives me 4 options, 2 are mobile, (when i install those i get a windows has a driver, so i install them anyway and it blue sceens on me).
F*cking thing has been upgraded to Vista, but I'm trying for XP MCE. (Sound isn't working properly and it runs like a dog on Vista) - #5What was the machine shipped with? XP or Vista?
XP doesn't really support AHCI mode anyway, you'll have a nightmare to try and get that working, and if you do it won't be a supported Microsoft configuration This is why drivers for XP are so hard to come by for AHCI mode on all boards.
If you want a stable build with XP on then just go into the BIOS and turn AHCI mode off and use legacy mode, which effectively makes a SATA drive accessible in the same way as an IDE one (i.e. Windows setup just 'sees' the drive with no need for additional drivers). - #6What was the machine shipped with? This is where it gets good. It ships with XP MCE.
The friend who I've 'done a favour' upgraded (I have to assume this was true as all the original apps were on there, he'd never have managed to re-installed them) to Vista (legally) and complained the machine was slow and there were issues with sound and it refusing updates including SP1 (all tricks tried, believe me). However, I don't know if Vista upgrade has an uninstall option, but I couldn't find it.
It was running like a dog. However, the Sony Recovery Utility would not run from the HDD as it claimed it wasn't a Sony VAIO. I tried Compatibility mode and 'Run as A' and it still refused to work.
It's a cut-down Phoenix BIOS with all the advanced menus hidden so I couldn't change the HDD access mode as I'd encountered this on a DELL before and done as you suggest. It also refused a BIOS update as there is a later version online so I just started to die inside a little bit.
All the drivers in the Sony downloads (and on the HDD) blue screened or were incorrect hardware.
In the end I've admitted defeat and clean installed Vista - it works fine now, but obviously I've lost all apps, but all is functional and it is SP1 built so it seems to sing along quite happily.
I'm going to let him install McAfee and kill the performance, but I wondered about DVD authoring software (data as well as) because it had Sony's awful Sonic Stage on, also Roxio and Real Player etc - too many cooks.
It works fine with Media Center for media playback - soundchip is the awful Sigmatel chip, but hey it's working. I was fiddling with this all day yesterday and I hope he's grateful.
Any ideas on DVD software? - #7The BIOS sounds wierd. Upgrading from any Windows OS to another is always a bad idea, you did the right thing wiping and reinstalling. Vista supports AHCI so no problems there.
For DVD authoring I've always preferred Ulead DVD MovieFactory over everything else. - #8The BIOS sounds wierd. Upgrading from any Windows OS to another is always a bad idea, you did the right thing wiping and reinstalling. Vista supports AHCI so no problems there.

Most lappy BIOSes are a bit restricted in terms of tweakability.
Mind you, they're not tinkered with as much and if you're going to overclock et al, then desktop is the way to go.
Just strange no Sony drivers worked.
